Volkswagen In Talks With JSW Group To Strengthen Position In India
Volkswagen is in talks with JSW Group for a potential India partnership focused on local production, cost reduction and strengthening its market position.
Volkswagen is in talks with JSW Group to form a potential partnership in India as the German automaker looks to strengthen its position in the country's competitive passenger vehicle market.
According to a Reuters report, the proposed partnership could help Volkswagen increase local production, source more components from India and reduce manufacturing costs. The two companies are also discussing ways to expand their vehicle portfolio and make greater use of their manufacturing operations in the country.
The talks come as Volkswagen continues to face challenges in India, where its market share remains relatively small despite having operated in the country for more than two decades.
Volkswagen Looks To Strengthen India Operations
Volkswagen, along with its Skoda brand, currently accounts for around 2% of India's passenger vehicle market. The automaker has struggled to significantly increase its presence despite India's growing demand for cars and SUVs.
The company has also been involved in a tax dispute with Indian authorities. In 2024, the authorities demanded around $1.4 billion from Volkswagen over alleged import-duty shortfalls. Volkswagen has rejected the allegations and said it complied with the applicable regulations. The matter is currently before the courts.
The proposed partnership with JSW could help Volkswagen improve localisation and lower costs, potentially allowing the company to compete more effectively in the Indian market.
JSW Group's Automotive Expansion
JSW Group entered India's passenger vehicle industry in 2023 through a joint venture with China's SAIC Motor. The partnership created JSW MG Motor India, which sells MG-branded vehicles in the country.
JSW has since increased its presence in the automotive sector, and a partnership with Volkswagen could further expand its role in India's car industry.
Under the proposed arrangement, Volkswagen and JSW could share control and divide responsibilities between the two companies. A dedicated decision-making structure could also be established to enable faster operational decisions.
Localisation And Production Could Be Key Focus
The potential partnership is expected to focus on increasing the use of locally sourced components, sharing vehicle platforms and expanding production capabilities in India.
Higher localisation could help Volkswagen reduce costs and improve the competitiveness of its vehicles. The companies could also benefit from sharing manufacturing resources and technology, depending on the final structure of the partnership.
For JSW, working with Volkswagen would provide an opportunity to gain access to the German automaker's global automotive expertise while expanding its existing manufacturing and automotive operations.
Volkswagen Faces Wider Global Pressure
The discussions with JSW come at a time when Volkswagen is under pressure to improve profitability and reduce costs globally. The company is facing increasing competition from Chinese automakers, particularly in Europe, while weaker growth in China has added to the challenges.
Trade tensions and tariff-related uncertainty have also increased pressure on global automakers, making markets such as India increasingly important for long-term growth.
Volkswagen and JSW Group have not yet announced a final agreement, and discussions are still ongoing. If the partnership goes ahead, it could significantly reshape Volkswagen's manufacturing and market strategy in India.
