E20 Petrol May Affect BS-III Vehicle Rubber Parts: Nitin Gadkari
Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari has said that BS-III vehicles manufactured between 2005 and 2016 may require replacement of certain rubber components and gaskets when operated on E20 petrol. However, he clarified that studies have found no significant impact on overall vehicle performance or engine durability.
Responding to a question in the Rajya Sabha, Gadkari said multiple studies conducted by Indian Oil Corporation (IOCL), the Indian Institute of Petroleum (IIP), the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), and the Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI) evaluated the effects of E20 fuel on different vehicle categories.
No Engine Modifications Required
According to the minister, the studies found that BS-VI vehicles continue to meet emission standards while running on E20 petrol, and there is no need for engine modifications in either cars or two-wheelers designed for the fuel.
He added that tests on legacy vehicles also showed no major concerns regarding drivability, engine starting, metal compatibility or plastic components. The vehicles did not exhibit abnormal wear and tear during the evaluation.
Older BS-III Vehicles May Need Component Replacement
While the overall findings were positive, Gadkari noted that testing indicated certain rubber parts and gaskets in BS-III vehicles manufactured before 2016 could require replacement after prolonged use with E20 fuel. Owners of older vehicles may therefore need to inspect and replace these components if required.
The statement comes as India continues to expand the use of ethanol-blended petrol to reduce crude oil imports, lower emissions and promote cleaner fuels.
Mileage Depends on Multiple Factors
The government also reiterated that fuel efficiency is influenced by several factors beyond the type of fuel used. Driving style, regular vehicle maintenance, tyre pressure, wheel alignment and air-conditioner usage all play an important role in determining real-world mileage.
