India's passenger vehicle market is witnessing a significant shift towards cleaner mobility, with alternative-fuel vehicles accounting for more than 40% of retail car sales in June. Rising fuel prices, expanding model choices and improving ownership economics are encouraging more buyers to choose electric, hybrid and CNG-powered vehicles over conventional petrol and diesel models.

According to industry data, CNG vehicles remained the largest contributor within the alternative-fuel segment, followed by hybrid and electric vehicles. Together, these powertrains achieved their highest share of passenger vehicle sales to date, highlighting the growing acceptance of fuel-efficient mobility solutions.

Rising Fuel Prices Influence Buyer Preferences

Higher petrol and diesel prices have become a key factor influencing purchase decisions. Many customers are now evaluating the long-term cost of ownership rather than focusing only on the initial purchase price.

Electric vehicles, in particular, offer lower running and maintenance costs, while CNG models continue to attract buyers looking for an economical alternative. Hybrid vehicles are also gaining popularity by combining improved fuel efficiency with the convenience of conventional refuelling.

Two-Wheeler EVs Continue to Lead Adoption

Electric two-wheelers remain the biggest contributor to India's EV market, accounting for the majority of electric vehicle sales. Their practicality for daily urban commuting, improving battery technology and lower operating costs continue to drive demand across major cities.

Electric passenger vehicles are also recording healthy growth as more manufacturers introduce new models across different price segments, giving customers a wider range of options than ever before.

Automakers Expand EV Lineups

Leading automakers are accelerating investments in electric mobility by launching new EVs and expanding production capacity. Companies are introducing vehicles across hatchback, SUV and premium segments to cater to growing consumer demand.

Manufacturers are also increasing investments in battery production, localisation and charging-related technologies as they prepare for higher EV adoption in the coming years.

Charging Network Continues to Improve

India's public charging infrastructure is steadily expanding, making EV ownership more convenient. Fast chargers are becoming more common across cities and major highways, while home charging continues to meet the needs of many urban users.

Government initiatives supporting charging infrastructure and domestic EV manufacturing are also contributing to greater consumer confidence in electric mobility.

Outlook

Alternative-fuel vehicles are becoming an increasingly important part of India's automotive market. With rising fuel prices, supportive government policies, expanding charging infrastructure and continuous product launches, demand for electric, hybrid and CNG vehicles is expected to remain strong.

As manufacturers continue to invest in cleaner technologies and buyers prioritise lower running costs, alternative-fuel vehicles are likely to play an even larger role in the country's future mobility landscape.
